My Japanese class was cancelled today, unexpectedly, leaving me with an hour between classes to burn. I was planning on getting my hair cut after classes were done, but since I had this extra hour, I decided to go ahead and get it done then.
I rather enjoy having my hair cut. It's nice to have it short again after it being uncomfortably long. The only thing I don't enjoy about the haircut is the obligatory small talk you have to endure. I'm the sort of person who would just as soon sit in polite silence and let the hairdresser (or whatever you might call them) cut my hair, cooperating whenever necessary. I doubt she really cares where I'm from, how long I've been going to school here, what I'm studying, and so forth. I'm sure she's a wonderful person, and I have nothing against her, but I just don't see the point of small talk.
This is probably just the practical side of me rearing its head. It doesn't come out all that often. I just thought I'd share with everyone how I think small talk is pointless.
And I wanted to announce to everyone that I got a haircut. Adore me.

I agree re small talk. That's why I've made friends with my barber. He's a comp sci man too; we have great conversations.
The thing about barbers is I'm sure they can compile some pretty cool memoirs of people they meet, after all if they don't start up conversations then they might not get some pretty cool stories about global domination and the like.
Small talk is prety much the bane of my life.
Alright, I'll admit I'm exaggerating. But I don't like it very much either.
Ugh okay, I don't mind small talk in general, but haircutting small talk kills me. I hate it with a passion. Argh!
But congrats on getting your ears lowered. I just have my grandma cut mine now. She usually does it a little too short but who cares? It's hair. It grows out. And if the grandma cuts, it's a free haircut.
Small talk with a haircutter is bad, but even worse is the incessant chatter among the asian ladies when they do nails! Of course, I don't speak whatever language it is, (Vietnamese? Tagolog?) so who knows what they're saying about me.....
Congrats on the haircut. May it help the knowledge come out during finals and help you through...
I completely agree with you! I'm really not good at small talk, and I especially hate having to make it while I'm getting my haircut/styled/dyed/whatever. So usually I put up with it for a bit and then lapse into a very comfortable silence. Getting my hair done is supposed to be relaxing, and trying to make small talk with someone whom I will probably never see again isn't quite that. They get a bigger tip if they shut up, lol.
(oh and hi! im new, I'll be reading this tonight instead of a book, cuz that's just what I do. ahem I hope you don't mind me leaving comments on such old entries? *looks shy)
